Abstract
919,450. Preventing incrustation. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 18, 1961 [Jan. 5, 1961], No. 515/61. Class 123 (1). Scaling in boilers, evaporators &c., particularly those in which corrosion is inhibited by phosphate treatment, is prevented or reduced by adding to the feedwater a quantity of a water-soluble grafted polymer as described in Specification 871,192, the polymer being derived by the polymerisation of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a preformed polymeric substance, the latter consisting of a water-soluble organic compound having a molecular weight greater than 1000 and being capable of entering into chemical combination with the ethylenically unsaturated monomer under the conditions normally employed for the polymerisation of such monomers. Preferably grafted polymers derived from starch or starch ethers and acrylonitrile are used, the polymers being partly or completely hydrolysed with caustic soda to give the corresponding starchgrafted sodium polyacrylates. The preformed polymeric material may also be cellulose ethers, starch dextrins or polyvinyl alcohol whilst the monomer may be acrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methacrylonitrile or methacrylamide. The amount of polymeric material in the grafted polymer may be between 5 and 50% by weight. The amount of grafted polymer added to the feedwater, the addition being made with the sodium phosphate or other conditioning agent, is from 1 to 100 parts per million parts of water by weight.
