Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel emulsion that is made by effecting copolymerization of acrylamide, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid and other monomers in a specific proportion in a high-polymer protective colloid solution, thus showing high stability and fluidity in spite of high concentration.
CONSTITUTION: 30W70, preferably 35W65mol% of acrylamide, 25W65, preferably 30W50mol% of acrylonitrile, 1W20, preferably 2W10mol% of acrylic or methacrylic acid, 0W10mol% of other nonionic monomers such as styrene and a water-soluble polymerization initiator such as a peroxide or a water-soluble reducing agent such as amino compound are added to a high-polymer protective colloid aqueous solution and the copolymerization is effected at a pH of 3W5 and a temperature of 20W95°C for 1W10hr to give the objective aqueous emulsion of 10W15% concentration. The product is directly or after neutralization with an alkali used as a water-soluble salt of a copolymer.
USE: Paper strength-increasing agent, fiber board binder, paper coating and thicknener.
