Abstract

A lubricant for chrome steel containing at least 1.2% chromium comprises a charge transfer complex of iodine and an aromatic compound, the lubricant containing at least 0.03% iodine. The complex, which is prepared by dissolving iodine in any aromatic compound, may be added to mineral lubricating oil. Many examples of aromatic compounds both substituted and unsubstituted are given which include diphenyl, halogenated diphenyl, diphenyl ether, halogenated diphenyl ether and mixtures thereof. The mineral oil lubricant may be thickened to form a grease with a filler e.g. silica gel, carbon black, diatomaceous earth, molybdenum and tin, sulphides, graphite and alkali, alkaline earth, zinc, tin, lead and copper soaps.
