Abstract

In the extrusion of metals at a temperature below 600 DEG C. a compacted pad of lubricant is used comprising particulate lubricating material which remains unmelted at the extrusion temperature, incorporated with a material which is solid at room temperature but melts or softens at the extrusion temperature. The particulate lubricant material may be flaked graphite or molybdenum sulphide and the incorporated material may be powdered sulphur, wax, zinc stearate or a eutectic mixture of lithium chloride and potassium chloride; a binder such as stearic acid, dextrine or sodium silicate may be used to facilitate compacting.
