Abstract
Apparatus for the degassing of molten metals consists of a ladle with a vacuum-tight cover having an outlet to a vacuum pump, the cover also being provided with a vessel which receives the molten metal and introduces it into the ladle through a tube dipping deeply into the latter so that fresh metal is continually being exposed to the vacuum while a slag-free surface is maintained on the metal in the ladle. The inlet tube may be made of refractory treated to render it impermeable to air, or alternatively there may be provision for supplying an inert gas to the inlet tube when the feeding of metal is complete.
