Abstract

Consumable support lance for apparatus to be submerged in a high temp. melt, comprises a tube of material which is combustible in the melt. At the end of which it is submerged in the melt the lance has an outer coating of reinforced porous refractory cement in the form of a sleeve. This avoids the splashing and boiling which occur when an uncoated, e.g. carbon, lance is used for taking direct samples or measurements from a melt.
