Abstract

1,118,066. Screwdrivers. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. 23 Aug., 1966 [1 Sept., 1965], No. 37683/66. Heading B3N. [Also in Division B4] Nails or screws 11 are supplied from a hopper 23 to a position adjacent a pneumatic insertion tool 10 through a conduit 18 by low pressure air supplied through a line 55, and into conduit 18 via an escapement 24, and the screw is then moved into engagement with the jaws 16 of the tool 10 by high pressure air supplied to conduit 18 through a line 57 and escapement 24. A pneumatic screwdriver 10 is connected to a source of high pressure air by a line 14, and comprises a screw-engaging bit 15, axially movable relative to the rest of the screwdriver. Conduit 18 is axially slidable with the jaws, and carries a cam 19 which cooperates with a plunger 20 in line 14. Hopper 23 comprises a vertical support 25, a screw lift member 28, and a shoot 27, the member 28 being actuated by an arm 29 pivoted by a pneumatic motor 30. The escapement 24 comprises a housing 32, a piston 36 having a screwdelivery passage 40, which is adapted to be aligned with a screw receiving passage 34, and a screw delivery passage 35 in the housing. Piston 36 is connected to a shuttle member 39 which controls the supply of single screws to the escapement. Air is supplied to both sides of the piston in motor 30 by supply line 14, line 41, and valves 44, 45, and line 41 is connected to escapement 24 via valves 49, 58.
