Abstract
A sintered cermet is produced by subjecting a metal wool e.g Co, Ni, Mo, W or an alloy steel to a diffusion treatment with Al and/or Ni and/or Cu and/or V and/or Mo and/or Ta and/or Nb and/or Ti and/or nitrogen, with or without Cr, annealing to honogenize, impregnating with a ceramic such as an oxide or silicate and finally sintering. The metal wool may also be ferritic or martensitic chromium steel, austenitic chromium nickel steel or chromium manganese nickel steel. The elements are diffused into the metal wool from a melt, a salt solution or by vacuum deposition or by decomposition of a gaseous compound of the element and the ceramic impregnant may be a material having an Al2O3 base, a quartz or felspar base, or MgO, BeO, ZrO or magnesium aluminium spinel. A coating of an aluminide, boride, silicide, carbide, or nitride may be formed on the metal wool during the diffusion treatment e.g. a TiC layer is formed on a Cr-Ni steel by reaction with TiCl5 and propane or toluene. In the examples a ferrite Cr steel is diffused with Cr, V and Mo by reaction with the mixed gaseous halides, the diffused wool then being mixed with Al2O3 and kaolin, pressed and sintered. Carbon steel filaments are coated with Ni by dipping, annealed, chromed and then mixed and sintered with a ceramic.
