Abstract

A catalyst, esp. useful for treating exhaust gases from IC engines, is produced by (a) intimately mixing (i) a catalytically active component consisting of >=1 oxide of Cu and >=1 oxide of Ni and having a specific surface of >=10 (pref. 20-100)m2/g with (ii) >=1 refractory oxide (pref. Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, ZrO2, TiO2, SiO2-Al2O3, Al2O3-TiO2, Al2O3-CaO, Al2O3-MgO, Al2O3-TiO2-CaO, Al2O3-SiO2-MgO, or Al2O3-TiO2-MgO); (b) moulding the mixt.; and (c) thermally activating the moulded mixt. The Cu:(Ni+Cu) atomic ratio is pref. 0.05-0.5:1. Component (i) pref. also contains >=1 oxide of a metal M selected from Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, V, Se, Y and the rare-earth metals, the M/Ni atomic ratio being 0.03-1:1.
