Abstract

1,115,170. Sewing machines. L. G. SIMJIAN. 14 Oct., 1966, No. 45935/66. Heading DIG. [Also in Division B5] A method of reinforcing a stitched seam comprises subjecting at least some of the areas of thread penetration to ultrasonic energy at a power level sufficient to cause the dissipated energy to soften the material and flow around the thread. It is stated that the method is particularly applicable to lightweight material woven of synthetic fibre, and to thermoplastic sheet material. In a sewing machine for carrying out the method, a rod 17 is resiliently secured by a clamp 18 to the needle bar 16. An electromagnet 20 surrounding rod 17 is energised with high frequency electrical energy from a generator 21. Rod 17 is positioned to the rear of needle 14 at a distance d of one or more multiples of stitch length, and its height is such that its lower end briefly contacts the work during maximum needle penetration. Said lower end is tubular and is slotted in the direction of the stitched seam. Rod 17 may be replaced by a rotary star wheel. The ultrasonic energy may be coupled directly to a metallic thread which is used instead of textile fibre thread.
