Abstract

1,114,909. Turnbutton fastenings. CHICAGO LOCK CO. 3 Sept., 1965, No. 37785/65. Heading E2A. A lock assembly adapted for use on a cabinet door comprises a lock housing 16 having a tubular open ended cylindrical portion provided at its forward end with an integral, substantially diamond shaped rim flange 26 and at its rear end with an inturned bearing flange 46 presenting a central bearing opening, said rim flange having a shallow recess 34 in the forward end face thereof, a cylindrical sleeve 40 co-axial with and rotatably disposed within said cylindrical portion, a lock shaft 42 on the rear end of said sleeve projecting through said bearing flange, means 58 preventing said sleeve and shaft from shifting axially within the cylindrical portion while allowing free rotation thereof, a barrel and handle unit 20 including a lock barrel 70 and handle 72, said lock barrel being telescopically slidable in said sleeve between a retracted position wherein the operating handle is confined within the recess and a projected position wherein said handle is projected out of the recess, means 76, 78 establishing a driving connection between the barrel and sleeve, means 90, 92, 94 for fastening the barrel in the retracted position, key actuated means 22 for releasing it from the retracted position, means 80 to move it to the projected position and a turnbutton 14 on said lock shaft exteriorly of the lockhousing. In the construction shown the cylindrical portion of the housing is adapted to project through a hole in the door and to be secured to the door by mounting screws 30 which extend through holes in the flange 26. The turnbutton in use engages an inclined shoulder on the door frame so that as it is rotated it pulls the door to the fully closed position. The means 76 are grooves in the sleeve and the means 78 are ribs on the barrel and these enable the barrel to slide relative to the sleeve so that rotation of the handle also rotates the sleeve and the turnbutton 14. The means for fastening the barrel in its retracted position is a latch bolt 90 and an opening 92 in the barrel and another opening 94 in the sleeve which are engaged by the latch bolt which is biassed by means of a spring 104; the other end of the spring engages a plunger 96 which is slidable in an opening 98 in the barrel and an extension 100 of which engages an elongated slot 102 in the sleeve to limit the movement of the barrel relative to the sleeve. The key actuated means 22 for releasing the latch bolt 90 is a lock cylinder which is secured to the barrel by a screw 112 which engages a depression 114 in the lock cylinder 22, a part of the lock cylinder which carries an eccentrically positioned pin 106 being rotatably by means of a key 24, the pin 106 engaging a groove in the latch bolt; once the latch bolt is free of the sleeve the means 80, which is a spring, projects the barrel to its projected position. The handle 70 can then be turned to rotate the barrel, sleeve and turnbutton 14 to release the door. Rotation is imited by means of a stop washer 56 on the shaft 42 which has shoulders engageable with a pin 68 on the housing.
