Abstract

642,236. Casement fastenings; locks. PARKES & SONS, Ltd., J., CRITTALL MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., BUTTER, F. J., and ORDIDGE, E. F. Aug. 12, 1948, No. 21254. [Class 44] In a window or door fastener of the kind having a pivoted handle and a short projecting arm engaging in a keep or bracket on the frame of the window, &c., the handle is integral with or secured to a hollow cylindrical boss rotating on a fixed sleeve, and a barrel or plug of a tumbler lock mechanism is mounted for rotation or for endwise movement, or both, in the sleeve, and is normally locked against movement but released by a key, and means operated by rotation or end movement of the barrel are provided to lock the handle boss to the sleeve. In the form shown in Fig. 1. the handle boss 1 is mounted on a sleeve 4, a spigot 4x of which is secured in a mounting plate, and a keyoperated plug 5 of the flat tumbler type, housed in the sleeve 4 has an eccentric 7 which engages in a transverse bolt 9. In locked position the plate tumblers of the plug enter one of the slots 6 in the sleeve, and the bolt, which slides in radial bores in the sleeve, engages in a recess 10 in the boss. In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, a plate 12 is secured to the inner end of the plug 5, one end of the plate projecting through a slot in the sleeve 4 into a longitudinal groove 13 in the boss 1. The tumblers 14 of the plug each enter a separate hole in the sleeve 4. When the tumblers are withdrawn, the plug is pressed forward by a spring 16, and the end of the plate 12 comes opposite an annular groove 17 formed in the bore of the boss 1. so that the handle is free to turn. When the handle is turned back to the fastening position, pressing back the plug causes the tumblers to snap into the holes in the sleeve to lock the boss again. In another modification, the plug is formed with a cam shaped recess which cooperates with a ball located in a hole in the sleeve and projecting in the locked position into a recess in the boss; on rotation of the plug by the key the ball drops into the deeper part of the cam slot and frees the boss. In another form, release of the plug 5, Fig. 11, by withdrawal of the tumblers 14 from holes in the sleeve 4 allows the plug to be pushed forward by a spring 16, and a ball 20 located in a bore 24 in the sleeve and engaging in a recess 25 in the boss slides down a chamfered part 26 of the inner end of the plug.
