A pop-out handle and lock assembly comprises a casing 12 which includes a generally cylindrical housing 31 and an escutcheon 26 having a recess 27 therein, a rear wall 33 of said housing having a central opening 34 therein, a longitudinally movable and rotatable handle 11 mounted in said casing for movement between a retracted position and a projected position, the handle having a gripping portion 15 received in said recess when the handle is retracted and a hollow hub 14 conformably received in said housing, a radially inwardly extending flange 22 defining the rear wall of the hub, said flange defining a central opening and having a pair of radially opposed grooves 24 extending therethrough spring biassing means 48 in said housing urging said handle to projected position, a latch bolt 18 in said handle engaging said housing to retain the handle in retracted position, a cylinder lock 16 in said handle for actuation of the latch bolt, characterised by a drive spindle 13 extending through the opening in the rear wall of the housing and terminating at its forward end portion in a flat blade 42 which extends through the opposed grooves and central opening defined by said flange into the hollow hub and provided with a lock washer 44 at the forward end portion to retain the spindle against removal through the flange at the rear end portion of the hub, said flat blade co-operating with said grooves in the flange to allow longitudinal movement of the handle relative to the flat blade but causing simultaneous rotation of the spindle and handle, means 46 on said drive spindle co-operating with said housing to prevent longitudinal movement of the spindle and fastener means 49 secured to the rear end portion of said drive spindle for engagement with a keeper. In the construction shown the means 49 is a swing bolt which engages a camming surface of a keeper but in an alternative construction a roll pin extends through the spindle for engagement with camming surfaces of the keeper. The hub of the handle includes opposed longitudinally extending ribs thereon and the interior wall of the housing has opposed longitudinally extending grooves therein receiving said ribs to align the handle and casing for relative longitudinal movement and permitting retraction of the handle into said casing; when the handle is in its projected position the ribs are free of the grooves so that the handle can be rotated.
