Abstract

Water-soluble nitrogenous bis- or poly-a b -halohydrins are prepared by reaction of an epihalohydrin with ammonia or an amine of formula <FORM:1114036/C2/1> in which A is hydrogen or an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group of 1-5 carbon atoms, R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group of 1-5 carbon atoms or <FORM:1114036/C2/2> group or an <FORM:1114036/C2/3> group, in which X is oxygen or sulphur, n is 0-5 and R and A together may represent an <FORM:1114036/C2/4> In Examples: (1) epichlorohydrin is reacted with ammonia in methanol, the methanol being removed, an oil is obtained, (2) epichlorohydrin and butylamine, or monoethanolamine, (3) epichlorohydrin and ethylenediamine, (4) epichlorohydrin and 3,31 - diamino - dipropylether, (5) epichlorohydrin and diethylenetriamine.ALSO:The wet fastners properties of dyeings and prints obtained with sulphur dyes are improved by treating the materials with 0.1-5.0% by weight of the dry weight of the materials of a water-soluble bis or polya , b -halohydrin compound of those aliphatic or heterocyclic series containing at least one basic nitrogen atom this treatment being followed by conventional finishing processes. In particular the reaction products of an epihalohydrin with ammonia or an amine of general formula <FORM:1114036/D1-D2/1> in which A is hydrogen or an alkyl, or hydroxyalkyl group of 1-5 carbon atoms, R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group of 1-5 carbon atoms or a -(alkylene- <FORM:1114036/D1-D2/2> -)n-alkylene- <FORM:1114036/D1-D2/3> group or an -(alkylene-x-alkylene- <FORM:1114036/D1-D2/4> -)n -alkylene-x-alkylene- <FORM:1114036/D1-D2/5> group in which x is oxygen or sulphur, and n is 0-5 or wherein R and A may together form an <FORM:1114036/D1-D2/6> group. The impregnation is preferably under alkaline conditions prior to the oxidation of the dyeings or prints but may also be effected after oxidation. The reaction products of epichlorohydrin with ammonia, butylamine, mono-ethanolamine, ethylene diamine are specified.
