Abstract

[Also in Divisions B4 and F2] In machines such as creasing or cutting machines, wherein during their operation, pressure between co-operating cylinders 10, 11 varies because of gaps in the cylinders or during the interval between the passage of one sheet and the next, means are provided inwardly of their bearings to load the cylinders away from one another so as to prevent undesirable movement of the cylinders due to the pressure variation. Impression adjustment and tripping.-A reduced part of the shaft 10a of cylinder 10 is mounted in roller bearings the inner race 30 of which is fixed to the shaft. The outer race 31 is mounted in an eccentric 24 so as to be capable of limited axial movement with respect thereto for permitting axial adjustment of the cylinder as described below. Rotation of the eccentric in the side frame 20 to move the cylinder 10 to and from operative position is effected by a fluid pressure device (26, Fig. 1) and linkage(27), one of the links being adjustable in length to adjust the operative position of the cylinder 10. The other cylinder 11 is mounted in fixed bearings 23. Cylinder loading.-Between the bearings and the cylinders, the shafts are encircled by members 49, 50 with interposed roller bearings 51, 52. The members 49, 50 have enlarged holes engaging bolts fixed to the side frames 20 so as to permit free radial movement of the members. Flat inner faces 49a, 50a on the members are engaged by similar faces on two members 64, 65 separated by springs 71. Bolts slidably connect the pressure members 64, 65 and are adjusted so that they take the pressure of the springs 71 before the cylinder 10 reaches its tripped position, thus permitting the devices 64, 65, 71 to be removed or inserted as a unit. Wedges, screws or fluid-pressure devices may be used instead of springs to provide the loading. Axial adjustment.-A bracket 40 fixed to the end of the shaft 10a has an annular rib 45 engaged by shoulders 43, 44 on a spindle 37 having threaded engagement with a cover member 47 fixed to the eccentric 24. Rotation of the spindle 37 by a knob 36 effects axial adjustment of the cylinder 10. Framing.-Each side frame 20 comprises three parts (20a, 20b, 20c, Fig. 1), connected by bolts and having abutting surfaces along horizontal planes through the centres of the openings in the frame which receive the eccentric 24 and the bearing for the cylinder 11 thus permitting easy assembling and dismantling of the machine.
