Abstract

1,110,499. Firearm. W. A. ROBINSON. 11 Oct., 1966 [19 Oct., 1965], No. 45322/66. Heading F3C. A firearm comprises a rified barrel 24 opening at its loading end info a firing chamber 14. The chamber 14 is provided with a breech opening 22 having a seating 32 therearound within the firing chamber, a breech block 35 co-operating with the seating to close the chamber. The breech block 35 is mounted on an elbow 40 which is pivoted on a plate 50 bolted to the top of the firing block 16. The elbow 40 is urged into the breech block closed position by a spring 52. Rearwardly of the firing block 16 a carrier 65 comprising a wheeled dolly 70 is mounted for movement in a pair of tracks 72. Further wheels at the forward end of the dolly 70 co-operate with a pair of pivoted levers 80 which, on forward movement of the dolly 70, move downwardly, an associated roller 82 also moving downwardly to pivot the elbow 40 and urge the breech block 35 away from its seating 32. At the same time the carrier 65 which further comprises two resiliently telescoped cylinders 84, 90 and a piston 86 is urged through the breech opening 22 to carry a projectile 26a housed in the cylinder 84 up to the barrel 24. Further movement, of the carrier 65 telescopes the cylinders and effects relative movement of the piston 86 to urge the projectile 26a into the barrel. The firing mechanism comprises a trigger 66 which is provided With a contact 64 to engage a fixed contact" 62 and thus complete an electrical firing circuit which includes a spark plug 48 and electrode 44. The circuit also includes two contacts 56, 60 which engage when the breech is closed by the breech block 35. The projectile 26 is caseless and is provided with a button of solid propellant charge affixed to its rear end. The barrel is rifled to a depth of between 0À025 mm. to 0À038 mm. and a barrel of from 2À54 to 6À35 mm. calibre has about 20 rifling grooves (Fig. 5, riot shown). The firearm may be automatically actuated by spring actuation or desmodromic actuation and comprise ordnance or small arms.
