Abstract

1,241,840. Automatic firearms; cartridges. ALLIED RESEARCH ASSOCIATES Inc. 22 Oct., 1968 [6 Nov., 1967], No. 49975/68. Headings F3A and F3C. An automatic firearm comprises a frame 1, a cylinder 8 rotatable in the frame 1 and provided with a plurality of blind cartridge receiving chambers 9, a barrel 5 and recoil operated mechanisms for rotating the cylinder to. place a loaded chamber in registry with the barrel and loading a cartridge 16 into another of the chambers each time a cartridge is fired. The firing mechanism comprises an electrical circuit which is adapted to be completed through an electrical primer 30 in a cartridge in one of the chambers when the chamber is in registry with the barrel. In the construction shown the firing mechanism comprises a contact 33 within each chamber, each contact 33 being connected to a contact 35 on the outer wall of the cylinder, the contacts and connections therefor being insulated from the cylinder. A contact 36 mounted on and insulated from the frame engages the contact 35 of the chamber in the firing position. The firing mechanism further comprises a trigger 4 which when squeezed urges two contacts 43, 44 into engagement. A switch 41 is provided for permanently opening the firing circuit (as shown) or closing the circuit through a " direct " terminal 40 to provide automatic firing or through a resistor-capacitor circuit to give single shot firing. The cylinder 8, in firing the firearm, is urged rearwardly against a spring 11, a cam follower. 14 connected to the frame working in a cam groove 13 in the cylinder 8, to rotate the cylinder through 90 degrees. During the reciprocation of the cylinder 8 the loading mechanism which comprises a rack and pinion arrangement 22, 23, 24 in working engagement with the cylinder 8, is also actuated so that a plunger 18 thereof allows a cartridge 16 to emerge from the mouth of a magazine 15 and then urges the cartridge into an aligned chamber 9. A gas seal is provided between the cylinder and the barrel by tapering portions 12 on the cylinder. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) on firing a cartridge, a sleeve housed in the " fired " chamber is urged outwardly therefrom to bridge the gap between the cylinder and the barrel to form a gas seal. A spring- loaded mechanism is provided in the barrel for urging the sleeve back into its associated chamber. The firearm may be actuated other than by direct blowback. A cartridge 16 comprises a projectile 25 of lead, lead alloy or the like, an outer jacket 28 of explosive, electrically insulating material e.g. plastic explosive material, a charge e.g. of lead styphnate, and the primer 30 which may be platinum-iridium bridge wire.
