Abstract
A recoil-less launch system for a projectile consists of a launch tube (52) slideably mounted on a shoulder-supported launch tube holder (54) via guide rails (64, 66). The launch tube (52) has an open forward muzzle end (72) having an arrester ring (90) fitted inside it, a closure member (74) over its rearward breech end (76), a piston (78) slideably located within the launch tube and releasably linked to the closure member, and a propellant charge (84) located between the closure member and piston. Ignition of the propellant charge (84) from a firing mechanism on the holder (54) ejects the piston forwards against a projectile within the launch tube. The projectile is thereby launched through the muzzle end (72) although the piston itself is retained by the arrester ring (90). At the same time, the launch tube (52) is ejected rearwards of the holder (54) on the rails (64, 66), so that the tube provides at least part of the countermass necessary for recoil-less launch.
