[Also in Division F4] In an automatic control system for a furnace having at least two burners, in which the pressure in the fuel supply line 1 is increased to increase the fuel supply to the burners 3, 4, 5, the fuel/air supply ratio is kept constant by a controller 8 and additional burners are put into use when the fuel pressure exceeds a set limit, or out of use when the fuel pressure drops, two successive switching actions of the same type i.e. "burner on", or "burner off" can only take place when spaced by a predetermined time period. A pressure gauge 10, controller 11 and valve 12 control the fuel supply in accordance with demand signals from a pressure gauge 14 in a steam boiler. The signal from the pressure gauge 10 is also fed to a selector 15, 16 giving signals for high and low fuel pressure respectively. A device 17 receives signals from the selectors 15, 16 and switches on or off the next burner. The device 17 Fig. 2 (not shown) comprises a stopping switch operated by pawls actuated by solenoids energized in response to signals from the selectors 15, 16. Each position of the stopping switch corresponds to one burner. Switches connected to a time clock are arranged in series with the contacts operated by the selectors 15, 16, and are closed when the time clock is not running. In order that the time switch does not start if the preceding signal from the selectors moved the stopping switch in the opposite direction to the signal received, a changeover switch is arranged so that, in either position, it bridges one of the switches connected to the time clock Fig. 3 (not shown). Whichever solenoid is energized, the changeover switch is actuated to bridge the time clock controlled switch in series with the other solenoid.
