Abstract

918,747. Programmed electric control systems. FOXBORO CO. April 10, 1961 [April 18, 1960], No. 12836/61. Class 38 (6). An apparatus to determine a desired datum for an analogue controller from the output of a digital computer comprises means for translating the computer output to pulse width analogue terms and means responsive to these terms to position the controller to a corresponding setting. The flow along a pipe 11 is controlled by a valve 14 adjusted by an analogue controller 12 in accordance with the output from a flowmeter 13. The equilibrium point of the controller 12 is set by a set point station 26 which determines the flowrate according to signals fed into a B.T.U. digital computer 21 from a process which measures the temperature difference at 18, 19 and flowrate at 20 of another fluid through a pipe 15, and additionally from other processes which may be part of the apparatus. The computer 21 may be shared on a time basis with other stations by suitable switching means (not shown). A switch with one or more transitional stages may be incorporated to provide manual control of the process. A feed-back line 22 with analogue to digital conversion is provided to detect any error between desired and actual output conditions. The computer may be controlled by a programme recorded on punched cards or other means.
