Abstract

1,110,256. Oxygen lances. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 23 June, 1965 [26 June, 1964; 28 Aug., 1964], No.26608/65. Heading F4B. An oxygen lance comprises three mutually concentric spaced apart tubes, namely a central oxygen inlet tube which is formed at the lance tip 5 with four branch ducts 2 providing nozzles 6, an inner cooling water inlet tube 3 and an outer cooling water outlet duct 4. A helical member 7 situated in the water inlet tube just above the branch ducts ensures effective circulation of the water therearound, as indicated by the arrows. The helical member may be placed in the outer duct 4. In another embodiment, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), the central oxygen duct is made of copper piping with a 4¢ inch outside diameter, three branch ducts (23) being welded to the lower end thereof, effective water circulation [three] therearound being effected by helical members (28), (30) situated respectively in the outlet and inlet ducts (22), (21). The lower end of member 28 is attached in the outlet duct to a longitudinal baffle (32), an extension (32<SP>1</SP>) thereof in the inlet duct (21) being attached to the upper end of member (30), the lower end thereof being attached to a central baffle (29) co-planar with the baffle (32) and terminating short of the lance end (24), whereat also terminates an auxiliary baffle (31) arranged at 60 degrees to the baffle (29) and extending between the member (28), one of the branch ducts (23) and the outside wall of the lance. In both embodiments the central duct may be made of copper, brass or steel piping while the lance tip may be detachably connected to the main lance body, and the lance end (24) may be coated with a ceramic, non-metallic, metallic, organic, silicon-based, oxide based or refractory material, either singly or in combination.
