Abstract
966,268. Oxygen lances. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. May 9, 1963 [May 1, 1962], No. 16732/62. Heading F4B. An oxygen gun or lance for supplying oxygen to a metal refining furnace includes a discharge nozzle 19 having a plurality of passages for oxygen flow located adjacent its periphery and inclined at an angle to its longitudinal axis, which nozzle is removably housed within a shield or tip 16 projecting beyond it, the shield being cooled by water flowing in and out through spaces 31, 32 formed by a baffle 30. The shield or tip is of annular form and has an outwardly tapering cross-section at 27 and a convexly curved edge 29. The gun or lance may be made from two coaxial steel tubes 13, 12, the tube 13 supplying the oxygen and holding the nozzle, e.g. by a screw-thread. The nozzle is preferably made of ceramic material, stainless steel or copper. The tip may be of copper and is welded on to the tube 12 at 17. A number of such lances may be supported above the metal melt in a furnace. Specifications 758,529, 793,655, 824,333 and 837,781 are referred to.
