Abstract

1,110,235. Extruding. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, LONDON. 28 July, 1965 [10 Aug., 1964], No. 32344/65. Heading B3P. A hydrostatic extrusion assembly 24 which is positioned within a pressure container 20 comprises a copper sleeve 28 enclosing a cylinder 27, a segmental extrusion chamber 26, and a die base 25. A plunger for hydrostatically extruding a billet 36 through a die 29 includes an enlarged head 31 slidable in the cylinder. The plunger is urged downwardly by pressure fluid 37 in the container. The fluid surrounds the assembly 24 and thus urges the segments 34 (Fig. 6, not shown) of the chamber 26 radially inwards. Since the segments undergo no tensile hoop stresses they may be produced from ceramic material such as alumina or tungsten carbide. A sealing sleeve 38 within the chamber prevents hydraulic fluid from passing between the abutting surfaces of the segments.
