Abstract

Sliding-jaw wrenches.-In a wrench of the type having an adjustable jaw sliding on the head, transversely to the line of the handle, and operated by an adjusting screw in the head, the sliding jaw is formed with side cheeks engaging and sliding on the side faces of the head, and the screw engages a nut-block or cross piece integral with or secured to the side cheeks. As shown, the head a having the fixed jaw b and handle c is formed with a slot i through which the screw j extends, the screw passing through a nut or crossblock k engaging the cheeks e of the sliding jaw d. The screw has an operating-head l with a groove n engaged by a set-screw to prevent longitudinal movement of the screw. Undercut grooves g engage and guide the cheeks e, as shown in Fig. 4, and prevent rocking or lateral movement. In place of the undercut grooves, the head may have pins or lugs engaging slots in the cheeks of the sliding jaw.
