Abstract

A process for pyrolyzing coal at low pressures in a plurality of fluidized beds at successively higher temperatures is similar to the method described in Specification 1,090,728, except that in the final stage the product char is divided in three streams of which one is a product stream, one is burnt to produce hot gases, and one is entrained in the hot gases and after separation therefrom is recycled as heating solids to the last stage. A fourth stream of char from the last stage may be recycled directly to the carrier stages (except the first).
