Abstract

1,110,019. Container closures. A. B. HOLMES. 22 July, 1965, No. 31274/65. Heading B8T. [Also in Divisions F2, F4 and G1] A device functioning as a combined pressurerelief valve, liquid viewer and closure member for an aperture in a wall 302 of a container, includes a transparent or translucent viewing member 110 which extends into the container from above to below the required liquid level. The device may be contained in the removable filler cap of an I.C. engine liquid coolant system and may include means whereby the pressure at which the valve operates may be varied, and a further valve which permits the entry of ambient air to enter the container when the pressure therein falls to an excessively low value. As shown, a flange 310 is secured to the container wall around the aperture which is sealed by a gasket 170. The sealing pressure is applied by a rotational movement of the cap 150 which in known manner (e.g. through cams 316, Fig. 2, and a spring bearing plate 140 on the cap) compresses a spring 128. The spring pressure acts through serrated-edge ring members 132, 134 and a flange 114 to apply a sealing pressure to the gasket 170, and by relative rotation of the rings 132, 134 the effective spring length and hence the operating pressure at which the seal 170 is broken by the internal pressure in the container may be selected. The excess pressure is relieved through a vent 314. The spring pressure may alternatively be varied by arranging that the spring bearing plate (242, Fig. 7) on the cap be adjustable away from the cap (Fig. 7). The flange 114 is formed on a transparent viewing device 110 which enables the liquid level in the container to be seen from above the cap, this being suitably apertured for that purpose. An inwardly-opening spring-actuated valve 191 is provided in the viewing device 110 and opens when the pressure in the container falls below a predetermined value.
