Abstract

<PICT:1109117/C6-C7/1> Elongate metallic material, particularly steel, is heat-treated by blowing towards it from a plurality of nozzles a stream of gas at a temperature different from that of the strip, the gas having entrained in it a particulate material. The nozzles may be so arranged that the gas stream has a component of motion opposite to that of the strip. As illustrated, strip 13 enters chamber 13 by inlet 12, and leaves at 15. During its passage it is subjected to the action of gas/particle streams directed at it by nozzles 23; which are supplied, e.g. with sand, from hoppers 20 and by nitrogen from compressor 16. The sand is discharged through outlet 25, and is passed by ejector 26 through magnetic separator 35 to cyclone separator 29, the gas returning to the compressor through heat exchanger 32.
