Abstract

1,108,492. Water heaters. R. P. NEWTON. 24 July, 1965, No. 31677/65. Heading F4K. A water heater 1 comprises an upright stack 8, a flue chamber 6 having an outlet communicating therewith, and a cold water supply pipe 27 at the top of the stack 8 to deliver water to a staggered series of inclined baffles 26 to cascade downwardly in counter flow to the uprising flue gases, into a perforated degasser tray 31 and hot water collecting tank 10. Water sprays 14 in the flue chamber 6, quench and wash the flue gases before they contact the water to be heated in the stack 8, the hot spray water falling back into sump 18 from which it is recirculated to the sprays 14, to avoid contaminaing the water to be heated. The flue gases are generated by a burner 2 in combustion chamber 5 surrounded by water jacket 35, from which steam and/or hot water together with air are injected into the stack 8 just below the degasser tray 31 to further heat up the downwardly cascading water. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the flue gases used are waste heat flue gases exiting through a stack, instead of being derived front a separate water jacketed burner.
