Abstract
Aqueous emulsions for use in paper sizing comprise a hydrophobic material, for example paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, polyethyllene wax, high molecular weight fatty alcohol or high molecular weight fatty amide, and a basic aluminium salt of an organic acid, the weight ratio of hydrophobic material to alumina (as Al2O3) being preferably between 50:1 and 1.5:1, and the concentration of dispersed phase from 5% to 50% by weight of the emulsion. The emulsion may include non-ionic emulsifying agents, for example polyoxyethylene derivatives of sorbitan esters of long chain fatty acids, and non-ionic thickening agents. In the Examples, the emulsions comprise paraffin wax, basic aluminium formate or citrate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate, sorbitan monostearate, methyl cellulose. Other organic acid radicals are those of tartaric acitic, oxalic, maleic, glycollic and malonic acids.ALSO:A paper sizing process includes the step of mixing with aqueous paper pulp an aqueous emulsion comprising a hydrophobic material and a basic aluminium salt of an organic acid. The pH of the pulp may be adjusted before sizing to give a final value of 9.0. The hydrophobic material may be paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, polyethylene wax, high molecular weight fatty alcohol, high molecular weight fatty amide. The emulsion may be added to the aqueous paper pulp suspension in amounts to provide from 0.05% to 5% hydrophobic material based on the dry weight of the fibre.
