Abstract
1,274,654. Aqueous emulsions. LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 Nov., 1969 [12 Sept., 1968], No. 43381/68. Heading B1V. [Also in Divisions C3, D1 and D2] An aqueous emulsion suitable for use in paper sizing comprises as a continuous phase, an aqueous solution of at least one basic aluminium salt containing a cationic water-soluble or water-dispersible starch and as the dispersed phase, a hydrophobic material. The cationic starch may be an amine modified starch, i.e. starch containing tertiary amino or quaternary ammonium groups and which may be made by etherifying with an etherifying agent containing a tertiary amino group e.g. dialkylaminoalkyl halides, or treating such a modified starch with an alkyl halide to give the quaternary ammonium grouping. The basic aluminium salt may be a salt of tertaric, acetic, formic, oxalic, maleic, glycollic, citric and malonic acids, or of an inorganic acid whereupon it has the formula Al(OH) n X 6-n where X=NO 3 or a halogen atom and n#3 e.g. aluminium chlorohydrate. The hydrophobic material may be a paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, polyethylene and related waxes, high molecular weight fatty alcohols and high molecular weight fatty amides. Sodium pentachlorophenate may be added as a preservative. The emulsion was prepared by pasting the starch with water diluting heating and stirring. The wax was melted and added to the aqueous starch. The aluminium chlorohydrate was then added with stirring and agitated. Water was added and the mixture passed through an ultrasonic emulsifier before being cooled rapidly. The emulsion was then added to an aqueous paper pulp suspension to provide from 0.5%-1.0% by weight of wax based on the dry weight of fibre in the suspension. The pulp may contain TiO 2 , CaCO 3 or clay as a filler.
