Abstract

Particles of a hydrophilic liquid-in-oil emulsion are encapsulated by a process wherein the said emulsion containing an anti-inversion agent in the oil phase is dispersed in an aqueous dispersion of at least two coacervating colloids, at least one of which is gelable and at least one of which is an isoelectric colloid, at a temperature above the gel point of the gelable coacervating colloid and causing a coacervate to deposit on the emulsion particles to form a coating which may subsequently be hardened or plasticized, e.g. by treatment with aqueous formaldehyde. Conventional thickening agents, e.g. acacia, tragacanth, methyl cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, magnesium aluminium silicate, polyglycols, glycerin, and syrups may be added to the coacervating medium and to the hydrophilic liquid of the primary emulsion and the latter may also contain conventional emulsifying agents, e.g. esters of polyhydric alcohols, sorbitan- and sorbitan polyoxyethylene derivatives. The anti-inversion agent may be any material capable of preventing the inversion of the primary emulsion on its dispersion in the coacervating medium, examples being surface-active agents (preferably non-ionic) e.g. sorbitan fatty acid esters and polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid esters, oil-thickening agents, e.g. natural and synthetic waxes, solid fats, sterols and other conventional oil-gelling or oil-thickening agents. Examples of coacervating colloids are gelatine, albumin, casein, fibrinogen, agar-agar, pectins, collagen, starch acetate phthalate, amylene acetate phthalate (all gellable), alginates, acacia, starch and cellulose acetate phthalate. Coacervation may be induced by dilution with water of an initial dispersion of the primary emulsion in the coacervating medium or by adjustment of pH. Examples of such processes are given. Either or both phases of the primary emulsion may contain dissolved or suspended materials which render the capsules of the invention useful as sustained-release fertilizers, plant-growth agents and pesticides, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals with sustained or delayed release for oral, topical or injectable use, additives for incorporation into foodstuffs, e.g. vitamins and ingredients which would normally be lost in a drying step. Specific examples relate inter alia to encapsulated emulsions comprising: (a) urea in the aqueous phase (fertilizer preparation) and, (b) caffeine in the aqueous phase. Specification 751,600 is referred to.
