1,107,830. Rolling. WISSENSCHAFTLICH - TECHNISCHES' ZENTRUM AUSRœTUNGEN FœR DIE SCHWERINDUSTRIE UND GETRIEBEBAU, VEB. 24 Aug., 1965, No. 36327/65. Heading B3M. Rod material of small cross-section is produced from billets of large cross-section by passing the billet 7 through feed rolls 2, edge rolling on the short edges b in a planet mill 1, to form a section 9, passing it through feed rolls 5 and into a second planet mill 4, to edge roll section 10 on the short edges and form a section 11. The axes of each set of feed rolls and its adjacent planet mill rolls are offset by 90 degrees, and the axes of the planet rolls are offset by 90 degrees. In a modification, the planet mills are not offset, and a work-twisting device is provided between the mills. The ratio of the length of long edges a to the short edges b of the billet is the same as that of the edges b and c of the finished rod, and is at least 3 to 1. The rollers of at least the last stand are profiled to form round oval or rhombic profiles on the rod, or all but the last stand may have smoothing balls.
