Abstract

1,107,414. Baling machines. W.N. POWELL, A. F. POWELL, and H. ANDERTON. 12 April, 1966 [11 Jan., 1965], No. 1107/65. Heading B5F. A baling machine for waste paper &c. comprises a ram 16 reciprocable in a baling chamber 12 and having on its front face one or more grooves 40, 42, 44, each adapted to receive a needle, and means for interrupting the drive to the ram and for restraining the ram at or near the end of a compression stroke. As shown, the. ram 16 is driven from an electric motor 32 through a flywheel 30, reduction gearing 28, 24, a crank-pin 26 and a connecting-rod 22. The connecting-rod comprises two abutting tubular sections 64, 70 surrounding an inner rod 68 and held together by a hook member 76 pivoted at 74 and engaging bosses 66 on the section 64. Engagement and disengagement of the hook member 76 with the bosses 66 can be controlled by deflector arms 84 which can be moved into and out of the path of a pair of wheels 80 carried by the hook member. Retention of the ram 16 at or near the end of a compression stroke is effected by a latch member 86 movable into engagement with the rear of the ram. The latch member 86 and the arms 84 are operated through linkage (Fig. 2, not shown) under control of a manually operated lever 88. Feed rollers 150, 152 in a supply hopper 14 are driven by a motor 156 through a chain drive 156. Modification.-Instead of a crank drive, the ram may be driven by an hydraulic cylinder and piston with one or more valves for disengaging the drive and restraining rearward movement of the ram.
