An injection moulding machine has drive means mounted in a sub-frame 3, 36, 40, 41, 42 which is slidable in the machine, initial operation of the drive means in one direction closing the mould by means of toggle joints 44-46, and further operation in the same direction causing the subframe to slide longitudinally in the machine and to effect injection into the mould by means of a plunger 37 or axially reciprocable screw (67), Fig. 7 (not shown). The mould is carried by platens 33, 34 slidably mounted on tie rods 40, 41. The drive means may comprise an hydraulic cylinder (57) and piston (Fig. 5, not shown) or a non-rotatable screw 2 which is movable longitudinally by rotation of a pinion nut 4 (Fig. 1) within a housing 3. Movement of the subframe is permitted by opening outlets 53 to allow pistons 42 to enter cylinders 43. Movement of the screw may be produced by a motor 11 (Fig. 1) through a flywheel 9 and reversing gearing 8 or by a reversible motor (31), Fig. 2 (not shown), and bevel gearing (29, 60) or, as in Fig. 3 (not shown), through an extensible shaft (24), bevel gearing (20, 21, 30) and a clutch (23). The plunger 37 may be operated through a cylinder 38 connected to an air cushion (not shown). Alternatively, drive may be effected through the screw 2 until movement of the plunger is resisted by the injection material, whereupon hydraulic pressure is applied to the cylinder 38 to effect injection.
