Abstract

A coated material comprises a support having at least one coating containing gelatin and the alkane sultone of formula: <FORM:1107299/B1-B2/1> wherein n is 1 or 2. The alkane sultone may be present in an amount of 2-30% by weight. The coating may be applied as a solution formed by adding a solution of the alkane sultone in methanol to an aqueous solution of gelatine by dip, air-knife, roll, spray coating. Two or more layers of the coated material may contain the alkane sultone and gelatine. The alkane sultone-gelatine layer may be adjacent the support or, say in a light sensitive material, the alkane sultone may be present in the light sensitive emulsion layer or the protective layer. In the Examples (1) a silver halide emulsion layer is coated on a stretched polyethylene terephthalate support having a gelatine undercoat and a coating of butane sultone-gelatine solution applied on the emulsion layer, coagulated and dried; (2) silver halide emulsion containing butane sultone is coated on the support in (1), coagulated and dried, (3) a solution of gelatine butane sultone, saponin and an antihalation dyestuff is coated on the support in (1); (6) a silver halide emulsion containing propane sultone is coated on a cellulose triocetate support with gelatine undercoat; (8) a silver halide emulsion containing butane sultone is coated on a polystyrene support having a gelatine undercoat.
