Abstract
815,662. Coated films. ILFORD Ltd. Sept. 27, 1957 [Nov. 16, 1956; April 15, 1957], Nos. 35129/56 and 12221/57. Class 140. [Also in Group XX] A coating layer of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a sulphonated polystyrene or sulphonated polymethyl styrene including, or overlying a layer of, polyvinyl pyrrolidone or an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a polymethyl acrylate containing free carboxyl groups is provided on film base to improve the antistatic properties thereof. The polystyrene derivatives may be coated from mainly aqueous solutions but when including the other polymers the solvents used are mainly organic liquids. Surface-active agents may be present to facilitate coating and improve resistance to moisturecondensation on the layers when coated. Preferably a small proportion of the sulphonic residues of the polystyrene derivatives are converted to sulphonamides such as stearyl sulphonamide residues and the manner of such conversion is described. Six specific examples are directed to the coating of cellulose triacetate films, thus in Example 1 the coatings are of polyvinyl pyrrolidone in methylene chloride, acetone and methanol with a small proportion of water followed by sodium polystyrene sulphonate in water with a little ethanol and an ethylene oxide/alkyl phenol condensate as surface-active agent.
