Abstract

1,106,532. Induction testing of rails. AUTOMATION INDUSTRIES Inc. July 5, 1965 [July 13, 1964], No.28377/65. Heading G1N. Discontinuities and flaws in a railway track 24, Fig. 1, are detected by passing a large direct current through a section of the rail between two of the load bearing wheels 10, 12, of a vehicle the current being transmitted by the wheels themselves, and measuring the resulting magnetic field by a coil assembly 28, of known form. A D.C. generator G is connected to the two wheels, and also via resistances 34, 40, to two auxiliary wheels 30, 36 which are placed between the coil assembly 28 and the respective load bearing wheels. The auxiliary wheels serve to carry the current when the associated load bearing wheel passes across a gap in the track between adjacent rails. A duplicate measuring arrangement for the second rail is associated with the wheels on the other side of the vehicle. The current is conveyed to each wheel by means of a ring of brushes (94) Figs.2, 3, 4 (not shown) contacting the copper-coated endface (50) of the axle (42), and each axle has an insulating middle portion to prevent current supplied to one wheel, flowing also to the wheel at the other end of the axle. The brushes (94) are of graphite and are mounted in an assembly contained in a journal box (44), the assembly including fluid actuated pistons (84) which each urge a respective brush (94) into contact with the axle endface (50) against the restoring force of springs (88).
