Abstract

A simulated fall plate fabric is knitted on a Raschel machine having needles with short latches to enable the fall plate yarns to be fed beneath the latches at the same time as the other yarns are fed into the needle hooks. To prevent premature closing of the latches the machine has a stitch comb mounted on the latch side of the needles as described in Specification 750891. Openwork fabrics may be produced suitable for an insert in paper or plastic foils. A somewhat elastic yarn of synthetic fibres may be used as the fall plate yarns. Alternatively a two bar Raschel machine may be used on which the fall plate yarns of the elastic synthetic fibre may be fed to needles of one bar whilst the other bar produces a ground fabric from synthetic monofilament yarns, the fall plate fabric being attached at intervals to the ground fabric by intertwining. The low softening point of the monofilament yarns enables the fabric to be deformed and stabilizes the fabric of the elastic spun yarns when used for brassieres and bathing costumes.
