Abstract
A herbicidal composition comprises a 3-halo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile or a functional derivative thereof together with (a) an aliphatic acid of the general formula R-C(R1)2.CO.OH (wherein R is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a straight or branched alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and each R1 is the same or different and is a hydrogen or halogen atom) or a functional derivative thereof, and/or (b) a trazine of the general formula <FORM:1106123/A5-A6/1> (wherein R2 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy or alkylmercapto group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and R3, R4, R5 and R6 are the same or different and are each a hydrogen atom of a straight- or branched-chain alkyl group containing 1-6 carbon atoms) or an acid addition salt thereof, and/or (c) an uracil of the general formula <FORM:1106123/A5-A6/2> (wherein R7 is a hydrogen or halogen atom and R8 and R9 are the same or different and are each a group R3 as above-defined), and/or (d) a phenyl compound of the general formula <FORM:1106123/A5-A6/3> (wherein the phenyl ring "a" is optionally substituted with one or more substituents which may each be a halogen atom or a C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, amino or nitro group; and X is a hydroxyl, carboxyl, -Alk.COOH, -O.Alk. COOH or -NH.CO.Y group, the group "Alk" being a C1-C9 straight or branched alkylene chain and the group Y being a C1-C6 straight-or branched-chain saturated or unsaturated alkyl or alkoxy group optionally substituted with one or more halogen atoms, or the group Y being an amino-NAB group wherein A and B are the same or different and each being a hydrogen atom or a C1-C6 straight or branched alkyl or alkoxy group) or a functional derivative thereof, and/or (e) a picolinic compound of the general formula <FORM:1106123/A5-A6/4> (wherein the pyridyl ring "b" is optionally substituted with one or more substituents which may be one of the substituents optionally present in the above-defined phenyl ring "a") or a functional derivative thereof, and/or (f) a thiocyanate compound of the general formula M(CNS)x (wherein x is 1 when M is an alkali metal atom or ammonium group and x is 2 when M is an alkaline earth metal atom), and/or (g) a pyridinium compound of the general formula <FORM:1106123/A5-A6/5> (wherein A and B are each as above defined) or a functional derivative thereof, and/or (a) a compound of the structural formula <FORM:1106123/A5-A6/6> or a functional derivative thereof. The composition may be applied direct to undesirable vegetation, or it may be applied in association with an acceptable carrier therefor. Thus, it may be admixed with a solid such as talc, clays, diatomaceous earths, vermiculite, walnut shell flour or calcium carbonate, or with a solvent or non-solvent liquid. When the active ingredients are water-soluble, as in the case of alkali metal, ammonium and low molecular weight amine salts, the liquid may be water, optionally with additives such as sequestrants. Organic solvents, emulsifiers, penetrants and/or dispersants may also be included. Some of the formulations may be used in aerosol dispensers.
