Abstract

Deoxidized actinide carbides are prepared by grinding the carbide particularly uranium and/or plutonium carbide, and thorium carbide, for treatment and a hydride of the metals Ca, Sr, Ba, Mg and Al in powder form, mixing these powders, heating the mixture in vacuo and holding it at a temperature such as to produce decomposition of the hydride and a reduction reaction by the said metal, the amount of the latter being at least sufficient to substantially completely deoxidize the carbide. The hydride is preferably CaH2 in which case the mixture is held at above 700 DEG C. and the vacuum may be between 10-4 and 10-5 mm. Hg. The powder mixture may be cold-pressed to form a compact article and the heating carried out at such a temperature as to cause sintering. Amounts of less than 1% of Fe, Ni or Co may be added before the articles are pressed and the articls heated to between 1400 DEG and 1500 DEG C. without mechanical pressure.
