Abstract

A sintered metal product having a uniform metallographic structure is produced by treating a metal powder having a particle size up to 1 mm. (16 mesh) to form a film of a compound on the surface of each particle, which film reduces diffusion, degassing the treated powder by heating in vacuum, compacting the hot powder in vacuum and then shaping the compact by plastic deformation. The starting powder may be Al, Mg or their alloys, or Fe, Ni, stainless steel or copper and the compound barrier film may be formed either by mixing the ingredients together, by oxidation, fluoridation or by evaporation coating. In one example an Al alloy powder containing 0.05-4% of Fe and/or Ni is heated above 150 DEG C., cold pressed at a low pressure of 70-210 p.s.i., sealed in a container which is evacuated to 10-2 mm. Hg. and degassed at 600 DEG C. The enclosed degassed compact is then compacted at 250-600 DEG C. at a pressure of 570-1420 p.s.i. and after removal from the enclosure is hot drawn. Mg powder may also be oxidized by heating in air and then degassed, compacted and worked.
