Abstract
1362396 Powder metallurgy ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 5 Jan 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 55270/71 Headings C7A and C7D Metallic powder is formed into a billet by enclosing a body of the powder in a container having an evacuating opening, compressing the body and then pre-heating in a pre-heating furnace while it is being degassed with the evacuating opening connected to a vacuum pump. The evacuating opening is then closed and pre-heating is continued until the external surface is near the upper temperature limit allowable for the material used. The body is transferred to a pressure furnace and heating is continued until the interior of the body is above the lower temperature limit for hot compressing to the required final density and the pressure and temperature are maintained to complete the hot pressing. The temperature during the preheating and degassing step may be 300 to 650‹ C. For example a high speed steel containing À85% C, 4% Cr, 6À3% W, 5% Mo, 3À4% V and 8À7% Co may be pre-heated and degassed at 400‹ C under a vacuum of about 1 Torr. When the powder is of a high speed steel of approximate composition 1À25% C, 4% Cr, 6À3% W, 5% Mo, 3À4% V and 8À7% Co the body is isostatically compressed to 4000 bar before heating and degassing, the centre of the powder body is heated to at least 300‹ C before closing the evacuation opening, and the final sintering temperature is 1050‹C-1175‹C.
