Abstract
1,105,222. Filling and gettering discharge tubes. S.A.E.S. GETTERS S.p.A. 7 Jan., 1966 [8 Jan., 1965], No. 870/66. Heading H1D. A process for filling a discharge container with mercury vapour and for removing noxious gases employs the steps of placing a charge which consists of a powdered mercury compound and a powdered reducing agent on a supporting member within the container and, after a degassing treatment of the container, activating the charge by localized heating so as to induce a mercury evolving reaction, the powdered material of the reducing agent being only slightly active at the degassing temperature and having a grain size such as to comprise a fraction of fine granules and a fraction of relatively coarse granules. A preferred charge is powdered mercury oxide and powdered zirconium-aluminium alloy (84% Zr and 16% Al, by weight) contained in tablets in a weight ratio from 1: 2 to 1: 6, the mercury oxide having a grain size from 0-10 Á, and the alloy comprising 30% by weight of granules from 130-210 Á and 70% by weight of granules from 0-130 Á. The charge is placed on a support in the tube which is heated to outgassing temperature (about 360 C.) at which no reaction occurs. The tablet is then heated locally to about 800 C. at which mercury is evolved and the reducing agent absorbs other evolved gases. Thereafter the non-evaporable getter material is active for the lifetime of the tube.
