Abstract

964,105. Discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 14, 1960 [Nov. 17, 1959], No. 39018/60. Heading H1D. A method of manufacturing a non-evaporating getter, e.g. for an electric discharge tube, comprises mixing a gettering metal in hydride form consisting of the hydride of one or more of the metals zirconium, hafnium or titanium, or their alloys, of a grain size smaller than 5Á, with tungsten powder of a considerably smaller grain size, in a weight ratio of approximately 2 : 3, compressing the mixture into blocks, granulating the blocks and subsequently compressing to form tablets or pills of a desired weight, or in a container of a desired shape, those grains produced having a diameter of from approximately 0.1 to 0.5 mms. Finely-divided nickel powder may be added to the mixture in a proportion of 5-15% by weight. In a specific example zirconium hydride of grain size 2Á, tungsten powder of grain size 1Á and nickel powder of grain size 4Á are mixed and compressed into cylinders. The cylinders are subsequently ground and the fraction 0.125 to 0.5 mms. transported to a tableting machine which compresses tablets into a nickel-plated iron tape. The getter is activated at 700-900‹ C. in a discharge tube, hydrogen which is evolved being pumped off. Gases gettered include hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen and oxygen.
