Abstract

1,011,259. Gettering. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 20, 1962 [Nov. 21, 1961], No. 43866/62. Heading H1D. A method of producing a getter comprises the steps of mixing fine grains (2-30 m.<SP>2</SP>gm.<SP>-1</SP> specific surface area) of hydrides of zirconium, hafnium, titanium thorium, or any alloy of these, with equally fine grains of molybdenum or tungsten to hinder sintering; compressing the mixture under a pressure of 1 metric ton/ cm.; then granulating the compressed mass to form larger grains of about 200-300 microns diameter (Fig. 4) and packing these loosely in a perforated holder. In this way macropores 15 are formed between the larger (" secondary ") grains so that gas can reach the micropores 14 between smaller grains throughout the volume of the getterer. The perforated holder may be a gauze cage (also containing a nickel ring or plate for eddycurrent heating), or a nickel cylinder with gauze ends, or, as shown in Fig. 3, a pair of coaxial gauze cylinders pinched and welded at 11 to form a plurality of bags 9. It is shown that both the absorption rate and capacity of such getters are an order of magnitude higher than with a simple compressed mass.
