In a method of and apparatus for checking the level of a material in an open top container 10 a light is directed angularly downwards from a lamp 64 on to the liquid reflecting surface of the material in the container 10 towards the inner face of a side wall 38 of the container so that the beam is reflected upwards on to an electric eye 70 when the material is at or above a predetermined minimum or, is partially interrupted and the light reflected on to the eye 70 reduced, when the liquid level is below the minimum. The eye 70 may be in circuit with an indicator lamp or device which rejects the container from a continuously moving belt 24 provided with spaced pushers 22. A device 52 depresses container side flaps 44, 46 in the deflecting region.
