An optical instrument (e.g. a telescope or gun-sight) comprises a thin-walled metal body 1 having at least one indentation 4 which axially locates, via an axially-confined spacing sleeve 6 and optionally a compression washer 7, one end of an optical unit (e.g. lenses 8, 9 in a mount 10), and a graticule unit (e. g. nylon cross-wires in a housing 11) one end of which abuts the optical unit, the other end being located by a slidable spacing sleeve 12 by a lens mount 15 having a lens 14. An eyepiece consisting of a lens 16 in a mount 17 may be held in position by a locking ring 20.
