Abstract

A rubber-forming composition comprises by weight: (1) 100 pts of a siloxane gum in which the organic radicals are methyl radicals and optionally radicals selected from vinyl, aryl and halo-aryl radicals, of which not more than 35% of the total radicals are aryl or halo-aryl radicals and not more than 2% are vinyl radicals, there being from 1.98 to 2.05 organic radicals per Si atom; (2) a finely divided, non-alkaline, inorganic filler in amount of 10 to 300 pts.; and (3) 3 to 250 p.p.m. of Pt as a Pt-containing material, based on the siloxane. Fillers specified are silica (fume and aerogel), ground quartz and organosilicon-treated silicas, which can be used alone or in admixture with one another or with C black, diatomaceous earth or TiO2. Pt materials specified are Pt on charcoal, alumina, silica gel or asbestos, H2PtCl6.6H2O, alone or eomplexed with alcohols, ethers or aldehydes, and complexes of PtCl2 with olefins or cyclopropane, and these, in conjunction with the fillers, act as flame retardants. In typical examples (1-5), a series of rubbers was made by mixing a dimethyl-siloxane gum with SiO2 aerogel, H2PtCl6.6H2O and benzoyl peroxide, with subsequent press-curing, and the flame-retardant properties of the resulting rubbers were evaluated. Uses: for electrical insulation, gaskets, heater ducts and wrap-round tapes for elements.
