Abstract
A composition, for making silicone rubber having improved tear strength, comprises an organopolysiloxane convertible by heat to the solid, elastic state, and a minor amount, preferably less than 25 per cent by weight of the siloxane, of a solid polytetrafluoroethylene dispersed throughout the siloxane in the form of randomly distributed fibres. Other ingredients specified are fillers, e.g. silica aerogel, g -alumina, titania, lithopone, calcium carbonate, carbon and talc, and curing agents, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate, zirconyl nitrate and boron hydrides. The compositions may be made by milling mixtures of the ingredients on differential rolls or by extrusion in a machine employing a worm gear which imparts a shearing action on the P.T.F.E. The P.T.F.E. is used in the dry state or in the form of an aqueous dispersion, shearing deformation by the milling or extrusion causing it to be drawn into fibres. The compositions may be moulded, extruded, knife coated, used for dipping purposes (by using solvents, e.g. toluene and xylene) and may then be cured, e.g. at 125-200 DEG C. The cured compositions may be used as insulation for electrical conductors, as gasket materials, shock absorbers and valve seats. Examples are given.
