Abstract

A curable composition comprises the following ingredients in the proportions stated: (a) 10 equivalents of RHSiO present as a liquid siloxane consisting essentially of siloxane units in the unit ratio of 10 units of RHSiO to from 0 to 300 units of R2SiO, where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, there being an average of at least 10 units of RHSiO per molecule; (b) from 7 to 10.9 equivalents of a liquid alpha olefin; (c) from 0.04 to 2 equivalents of a liquid alpha, omega-diolefin; and (d) a catalytic amount of Pt, the total equivalents of terminal olefin groups present being within 10% of the equivalents of the RHSiO units present. The composition on heating to a temperature of 90 DEG to 170 DEG C. cures to a solid material (resin, rubber or gel) that is insoluble in organic solvents, though curing can be effected at room temperature. Ingredients specified are (b) hexene-1, decene-1, 2 - ethylhexene - 1, styrene, octadecene - 1 and methylstyrene; and (c) octadiene-1,7, 2-ethylhexadiene - 1,5, decadiene - 1,9, octadecadiene - 1,17 and divinylbenzene. In a typical example (1) H2PtCl6 was added to a mixture of a trimethylsiloxy-terminated methylhydrogenpolysiloxan and a mixture of liquid alpha-olefins of 9 to 11 C atoms per molecule, 4% by weight of the olefin mixture being alpha-omega diolefins, and the resulting composition was heated to yield a soft gel. Uses: for sealing and for potting electronic components.
